The Ilyushin Il-10 is a Soviet ground-attack airplane developed at the end of World War II as the successor to the Il-2 Shturmovik.[1] Czechoslovakia built it under license as the Avia B-33. In all, 6,166 were built, 4,966 Il-10s and 1,200 B-33s.[1] None are on the U.S. civil register.[2]

History

The Il-2 had served the Soviet air force well, but as the war went on the Soviets planned a successor. The main goal was more speed and agility at low level, to dodge the small-caliber anti-aircraft guns that were the main threat to ground-attack airplanes.[1] The Il-10 first flew on April 18, 1944, and entered service the same year.[1] Production ran until 1954, and China flew the last ones until 1972.[1] NATO called it "Beast".[1]
