The Cessna CitationJet, Model 525, is a series of light business jets in the Citation family, sold as the CitationJet, CJ1, CJ2, CJ3, CJ4 and M2. Cessna launched it in October 1989; the first flight was on April 29, 1991, the FAA certified it on October 16, 1992, and the first one was delivered on March 30, 1993. By June 2017, 2,000 of all versions had been delivered.[1] In the U.S. there are 1,941 with a valid registration.[2]

History

Cessna stopped building the Citation I in 1985 because its Pratt & Whitney JT15D-1 engines had become too expensive. It still saw a market for a light four- or five-passenger jet that was cheap to run, gentle to fly and able to use short runways, and the CitationJet was its answer.[1]

It uses the Citation II's forward fuselage with a new laminar-flow supercritical wing developed with NASA and Boeing, a T-tail and two 1,900 lbf Williams FJ44 engines. It weighs about 10,000 lb, can be flown by one pilot, and flies 1,500 nmi with four passengers.[1]

The family

  • CitationJet, CJ1, CJ1+, M2 (525): the original size.[1]
  • CJ2 and CJ2+ (525A): a stretched CJ1, built from 2000 to 2016.[1]
  • CJ3 and CJ3+ (525B): a further stretch, built since December 2004.[1]
  • CJ4 (525C): with a moderately swept wing, built since 2010.[1]

In 2021 Cessna announced the updated Citation Gen2 versions, and in 2024 the Gen3, expected in service in 2026.[1]

Registered in the United States

The FAA register lists 1,941 of these airplanes with a valid U.S. registration. Here they are by the model name the FAA uses.[2]
