The Ilyushin Il-4 (first called the DB-3F) is a Soviet twin-engine long-range bomber and torpedo bomber, widely used by the Soviet air force and navy in World War II.[1] In all, 5,256 were built from 1940 to 1945.[1] None are on the U.S. civil register.[2]
History
In 1938 the Ilyushin bureau redesigned its DB-3 bomber to make it easier to build and better performing. The new version was called the DB-3F, for forsirovanniy, "boosted".[1] The inner structure, especially the wings, was heavily changed so it no longer needed hand finishing, and duralumin replaced much of the steel used before.[1] NATO later called it "Bob".[1]
