The Gulfstream IV (G-IV or GIV) and its derivatives are a family of twinjets, mainly for private and business use, designed and built by Gulfstream Aerospace of Savannah, Georgia, from 1985 to 2018, with two Rolls-Royce Tay turbofans. More than 900 GIV, GIV-SP and G450 jets were built; the last G450 was delivered on January 19, 2018, ending a 30-year run.[1] In the U.S. there are 613 with a valid registration.[2]

History

Gulfstream and Grumman began work on the GIV in March 1983 as a re-engined, stretched version of the Gulfstream III. It first flew on September 19, 1985, and the FAA certified it on April 22, 1987. It became the GIV-SP in 1993, later called the G400, and was followed by the G350 and G450. Redesigning the wing structure to save weight also let Gulfstream reshape the wing to cut cruise drag and add range.[1]

Hurricane hunter

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) flies a modified GIV-SP (N49RF) at 45,000 ft around tropical cyclones, dropping instruments called dropsondes that measure wind, pressure, humidity and temperature on the way down, to help the National Hurricane Center's forecasts.[1]

The U.S. military flies it as the C-20F, G, H and J.[1]

Registered in the United States

The FAA register lists 613 of these airplanes with a valid U.S. registration. Here they are by the model name the FAA uses.[2]
