The Ilyushin Il-28 is a Soviet jet bomber that entered service in 1950, the first Soviet jet bomber built in large numbers. The Soviet Union built 6,316.[1] China built more without a license as the Harbin H-5, and North Korea still flies about 80.[1] None are on the U.S. civil register.[2]

History

The Il-28 first flew on July 8, 1948.[1] It carried both nuclear and conventional bombs for the Soviet Union until the late 1950s, and for China until the 1990s.[1] Il-28s drew worldwide attention in the Cuban Missile Crisis, when they were sent to Cuba with tactical nuclear bombs.[1]

It went to the Warsaw Pact countries and was flown in many conflicts, from the 1956 Hungarian Revolution to wars in the Middle East, Africa and Afghanistan.[1] NATO called it "Beagle", and the trainer version "Mascot".[1]
