The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-19 is a Soviet twin-jet fighter and the first Soviet production airplane that could fly faster than sound in level flight.[1] China built its own version, the Shenyang J-6.[1] None are on the U.S. civil register.[2]

History

In 1950 the MiG design bureau began a new fighter with more range than the MiG-15 and MiG-17 that could go supersonic in level flight. It used two of the new Mikulin AM-5 axial jet engines.[1] The SM-2 prototype first flew on May 24, 1952, and the MiG-19 entered service in March 1955.[1] The Soviet Union built 2,172, not counting Czechoslovak and Chinese production.[1]

Its American counterpart was the North American F-100 Super Sabre, but over North Vietnam it mostly fought the newer F-4 Phantom II and F-105 Thunderchief.[1] NATO called it "Farmer".[1]
