The Rans S-6 Coyote II is a two-seat, single-engine, high-wing airplane designed by Randy Schlitter and built by Rans Inc., sold as a kit for amateur builders or as a complete light-sport airplane.[1] In the U.S. there are 295 with a valid registration, counted by model name because homebuilts are registered under their builders' names.[2]
History
Schlitter designed the original single-seat S-4 Coyote in 1982 because he was unhappy with the ultralights of the day; the first prototype flew in March 1983. The two-seat Coyote II grew from the S-5 Coyote. The first S-6 was replaced by the improved S-6ES ("extended span") in April 1990, and the S-6S Super Coyote joined it in 1993.[1]
Every S-6 has a welded 4130 steel-tube cockpit and a riveted aluminum-tube rear fuselage, wings and tail, all covered in fabric. The S-6 and S-6ES use pre-sewn Dacron covers that speed building, about 250 hours for the ES, while the S-6S uses traditional dope and fabric, about 500 hours.[1]
Registered in the United States
The FAA register lists 295 of these airplanes with a valid U.S. registration. Here they are by the model name the FAA uses.[2]
