The Van's RV-10 is a four-seat, single-engine, low-wing homebuilt airplane sold as a kit by Van's Aircraft, the first four-seater in the popular RV series. It first flew on May 29, 2003, the first kit parts went to a customer in September 2003, and as of November 2022, 1,010 RV-10s had been completed and flown.[1] In the U.S. there are 702 with a valid registration, counted by model name.[2]
Design
Richard VanGrunsven designed the RV-10 to meet demand for a four-seat RV. It was designed from the start as a touring airplane, so it gives up the aerobatic ability and light handling of the RV-3 through RV-8 for more stability and payload. It was designed for 210 to 260 hp; the prototype flew with a 260 hp Lycoming IO-540, the most the airframe was designed to take.[1]
Van's first planned three engine choices, a 210 hp Continental IO-360 and 235 or 260 hp Lycoming IO-540s, but dropped support for the Continental after a poll showed most builders would choose the Lycoming.[1]
